Treating a Snake Bite / How to prevent, recognize and treat snake bites

snake-eyeAlthough nearly 8,000 people are bit by venomous snakes each year, there are usually no more than eight deaths. However, this should not lead backpackers and hikers to believe it isn’t something to worry about. Snakes do not want to waste their poison on humans, but rather rodents and other small animals to feed on. If a bite victim is not treated quickly, the venom can be deathly. Even a bite from a so-called “harmless” snake can cause infection or allergic reaction.

Spear Fishing for Survival

Fish-spear_4WHY A FISH SPEAR?

Grrrrroonk, grrrroooonk is a sound I hear quite frequently near lakes and ponds where I live in Western Washington. It is the telltale sound of a bullfrog. This species is highly invasive to Washington state and they will wipe out any smaller animal in their path so it is legal to hunt bullfrogs here (frog legs are also quite tasty!) This article is about one way of hunting this frog with a fish spear!

How to Build a Coracle

coracle-6-538x354Once humans developed a need to travel on water in order to fish, trade and explore, cultures worldwide created lightweight boats consisting of the skin of an animal stretched over a light frame of wooden poles or strips. One such boat is the coracle.

This is a boat of the British Isles and is varied in design depending on the locality. Most coracles are round or boxy in shape, and are more or less a basket with the tarred skin of a bullock or horse stretched over it.

How to find or build a survival shelter

emergency-sheltersBuilding a survival shelter is an absolute priority, if you face a survival situation in harsh or unpredictable weather. How To Break Down A Door

Breaking-DoorsAlright, let’s get this out of the way first: kicking down a door is not the best option for opening a locked door. It will damage the door and cost you lots of money to fix it. It is better to call a locksmith, pick the lock, or attempt to crawl in a window.

But let’s say it’s an emergency. You’re in a burning house and you need to escape and the door is on fire. Or your loved ones are in a burning house and you’re locked out. You can’t stand there fiddling with the lock, you’ve got to break it down! Or perhaps a loved one is stricken with a medical emergency and is locked inside a room or in their house. What to do? Be a man, dammit! Break down that door! You know you’ve always wanted to.

After an EMP Attack – How To Get Home When it’s 700 Miles Away

WalkingHomeI sometimes have to go out of town on business just like millions of other people each year. The distance and locations all vary with the need, but in a lot of cases, I am unable to be as equipped as I would normally be around my home town. In some cases I travel internationally, but that is rare. Sometimes I only travel an hour or two by car so I opt to drive. In this type of situation, I can take my Get Home Bag and usually a firearm (or two) with me.

How to Find the Best Survival Knife

SurvivalKnife-708x404I like knives. Actually, there aren’t many knives out there that I can’t respect on a certain level for their utility and in some cases beauty. Knives come in all shapes and sizes and have various compositions and specialties. They have different configurations and nomenclature and if you take a look around carefully you will see a high percentage of guys carry at least one clipped to a pocket. I must not like them as much as some people though because I don’t have that many of them.

Training Your Dog For Survival

DogTrainingThere are millions of people out there who would never leave their dogs behind in any emergency situation if they can help it. That is wonderful and that sort of love and loyalty is to be commended. So I ask, why not take it one step further and train your dog to benefit you in a survival situation?

Prepper Power! – The Advantage of Hydroelectricity

WaterWheelPowerIt’s a fact that energy makes our lives far more comfortable and in some cases, even safer. Preppers who are able to have a reliable source of energy during and after an unexpected event, will fare much better than those without.

Being a Nautical Prepper myself, when I am at sea and at remote locations onboard our ship, we utilize several sources of energy; Wind (to propel the boat and to drive the wind-generator), Solar (panels) and Diesel (diesel powered generators). But there is one source of energy that we cannot tap into, but is available to terrestrial Preppers…
