Survival Crop: Corn

SweetCorn01Would you believe me if I told you this is the first year I’ve ever grown corn in my garden? It’s true. In spite of it’s time tested homesteader friendliness, I’ve never grown it before.

Corn is so ubiquitous up here in Iowa, that there’s really no reason to grow my own corn. The trucks full of sweet corn in the hardware store’s parking lot are there all season, and it’s hard to beat the 4$ a dozen price tag.  I am growing some this year, but it’s proving right all the reasons I gave myself for not growing my own.

5 Easy To Carry Foods For Your 72-Hour Kit

When something unexpected happens and your family needs to evacuate your home, either by car or on foot, a proper 72-hour kit can provide everything you need to sustain yourself for up to three days.  Many people tend to overburden their kits with food—forgetting that they are for survival, not gourmet dining.

Survival for Pregnant Women and Babies

I finally got around to watching these two videos from The Patriot Nurse. They’re about survival for pregnant women. My wife is not pregnant and we don’t have any small children, so it didn’t seem like a priority. However, we’ve talked about having a child. We could continue to wait until after the economy collapses and recovers, but no one knows how long this train wreck could last or how long the recovery might take. And people have raised happy families in difficult times before. Unless you know for a fact that the end of the world is imminent, I see no reason to delay having children. You could wake up an old person and realize you waited for nothing. Having said that, if you are thinking of having children you’ll have to know how to care for pregnant women and babies if the SHTF. These videos will get you started :

Survival Balcony Gardening (VIDEO)

Someone pointed out that I haven’t made many posts about gardening, so I want to share a few videos from TuxsRams that cover some of the most common vegetables you can grow on a patio or balcony and what types of containers to put them in. The second and third videos show the results of his work. This a great introduction for anyone interested in balcony gardening.

Survival Nutrition

Staying healthy in a survival situation should be at the top of your preparation to-do list.  By maintaining health in an extreme circumstance you can better insure your own survival and that of your families.

Along with attention to proper hygiene, the key to staying healthy when you are relying on your own resources is eating proper nutrition.  The absolute best way to get good nutrition is by providing sources of fresh fruits and vegetables to you and your dependents in every situation. An MRE is not going to get the job done and neither is a conventional vitamin.
